Another site near Krakow, which cannot be missed, is Auschwitz. Auschwitz has become a symbol of terror, genocide, and the Holocaust. The site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979. The camp was opened in 1940 and by 1942 become the site of the greatest mass murder in the history of humanity, which was committed against the European Jews as part of Hitler’s plan for the complete destruction of the people. In January of 1945 Red Army Soldiers liberated the camp and in 1947 the Polish parliament established Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum on the ground of the camp.

Visiting Krakow you cannot miss the Salt Mine Wieliczka. It is a unique site chosen together with 12 other sites from all over the world in 1978 and placed on a UNESCO World Heritage List .
Wieliczka is the only salt mine where mining has continued since the Middle Ages. The mine is spread over nine levels, and has 300km of galleries with works of art, alters, and statues sculpted in the salt. Wieliczka offers a fascinating pilgrimage into the past of a major industrial undertaking.

Czestochowa is the spiritual heart of Poland and the country’s national shrine. It owes its fame to the miraculous icon of the Black Madonna, kept in the Monastery of Jasna Gora which has been bringing pilgrims from all corners of the country and beyond for centuries.
Today Czestochowa attracts some of the largest pilgrimages in the world (local sources put it fifth, after Varanasi, Mecca, Lourdes and Rome).

The Monastery of Jasna Gora remains a vibrant symbol of Catholicism in a highly religious country and still retains the appearance of a fortress. It is located on the top of the hill and it is clearly recognizable from a distance. Inside the walls are a number of buildings, in addition to the monastery, a chapel and a church. The Chapel of the Miraculous Picture is the oldest part of the complex and is where the Black Madonna is kept. The picture is placed on the high alter and covered with a silver screen at night.
Czestochowa is easily accessible by car, train and bus. It is located at about 200km from Krakow.
